Treasury Bills Essay INTRODUCTION Executive Summary Investment is the process of putting excess funds of an individual, groups or companies in ventures that will have better returns.   For the investment to be viable, a stream of benefits must be anticipated in future years.   Investment can either be a short term or long term.   The best investment option for the company or individual is always based on availability of funds to be committed and for how long.   Short term investment always is made when an individual wants to recoup his funds quickly and normally periods of less than two years period.    The interest cost associated with it is always very small and can be ignored. Long term investment involves a long period to recoup the investment outlay. Most firms are at cross roads they are not sure where to invest the excess funds which can be either in the mutual fund or treasury bills.   The decision to put the money in either of the option will depend on the following; How long will the funds be available? What is cost of capital to be used? Liquidity of the firm What other long-term and short term projects planned? What is the attitude towards risk? What is the government policy on investment? In order for me to come up with proper decision where to invest, we are undertaking a project to overcome the factors mentioned above.   The objectives of the project will be:- To identify the better investment at times excess of funds in the short-run To identify the better investment at times of excess funds in the long-run To identify the risky investment among the two Which of the two affects the liquidity of the fund in the long-run? Statement of the problem Investment decisions are very important at times of excess funds or little funds.   The investment in mutual funds or treasury bills is always a problem to individuals and companies.   Companies or individuals without financial advisors may be faced with problem of choice. 1.3 Goals In making an investment of funds that are available, the investor needs to identify which investment is ideal; the treasury bills or money market mutual fund. 1.4 Objectives or tasks The objectives of the study will be based on the following:- Which of the two has less risk? What are the interest rates that are offered? What has been the performance of each in the past? What are the certainty recouping funds in full at times of inflation? Which attracts less tax? Who has issued the Treasury bill or mutual fund? From past records mutual funds are riskier as compared to Treasury bill.   This is because it is assured that governments will honour their entire obligation as compared institutions.   Governments can not become insolvent being issuers of treasury bills except one that past a resolution in parliament not honour their debts. Treasury bills always offer a lower rate as compared to mutual funds money market.   Treasury bills are either 90 day or 180 day periods which can be rolled over in case the investor does not need the funds immediately. The project will cost 2400 to its completion.   The funding will be provided by the Scholarship Provider. Editing The report will compile and analysed after the data has been collected.   The report will be written by James and taken for typesetting at Mary’s place.   After typesetting the report will be printed and copies given to James, Joseph, John, Mary, Asnata and Jane for checking and editing to produce a good copy.   After the editing each editing member contributions will forward to Mr. Johnson for inputting and typeset document, a final draft will be produced. Arguments over land, restrictions, and laws were common amongst the Indians and whites. It got to a point where the state of Georgia wanted the Indians off their land. Georgia complained to President Andrew Jackson, and he proposed the Indian Removal Policy. This policy was intended to be a peacemaker, but was really a threat to the Cherokee culture.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Through the American eyes the removal of the Indians meant more land which in turn meant more power and resources. Since the Indians were leaving, the resources would be in abundance to the whites. The government ( gov’t ) of the United states has been longing to introduce the arts of civilization, and it was the perfect time. Some of the members of the Southern tribes attempted to leave their savage ways, and in using what they learn they wanted to set up a gov’t they can call their own. If they were given permission to.. it would mean finally escaping the American laws.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The removal policy that started out as a voluntary request, progressed into a forced demand. The year that followed Andrew Jackson’s message to Congress, the U.S Army marched the Indian to their marked land. Thousands died along the way from lack of food and so forth. This path became known as the Trail of Tears. The Indians arrived on their territory, they soon realized their crops could not grown properly. The land they were on was bad soil, once again the Indians were given the short end of the stick, and faced with a difficult decision to stay, or to leave? Black Hawk’s tribe was one of the tribe who was asked to relocate to Iowa, and like the others found living conditions unbearable. Black Hawk took a stand, and fought the U.S troops this conflict became known as â€Å" Black Hawk War†. Black hawk was thrown in jail.

Charles Manson had experienced a very bumpy childhood being the son of a teenage, bisexual, alcoholic prostitute. Being shuffled between homes of relatives and orphanages, it is not surprising to see that his criminal activity sprouted from a very early age. Manson’s incredible charisma attracted many hippies and he managed to earn himself s reputation as god-like in the eyes of many beautiful girls. When Manson and his â€Å"Family† settled down in Spahn Ranch he was able to sleep with a different girl each night. Not only this, but he had the power to make his Family members murder whomever he was unhappy with. In fact, the Family members were often more than happy to commit murder is it pleased Charles Manson. The Family used particularly gruesome methods of homicide and one woman had even contemplated carving an unborn baby out of the body of a murdered woman, as it would have made Manson proud. Charles Manson managed to brainwash his followers and make them worship like a god. He abused power severely by ordering his Family members to kill people, often random, for his satisfaction. Being in his position, he could have prevented all the murders however he chose not to, and never hesitated to even discourage them. Charles Manson is best known for the murder of Sharon Tate. Actually it would be more accurate to say Charles Manson and his â€Å"family† murdered Sharon Tate, and actress and wife of director Roman Polanski. The victims of the Manson family included Sharon Tate and her unborn baby Paul Richard Polanski, as well as her guests that evening, Abigail Folger, and her boyfriend Voytek Frykowski, and an internationally known hair stylist Jay Sebring. The day after those murders the family killed Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Before either of these murders took place part of the family murdered Gary Hinman. A man named Donald â€Å"shorty† Shea was also killed. The Manson Family also eventually killed defense attorney for one of the Manson Family members, Ronald Hughes, during the course of the trial. So why would Charles Manson lead a number of followers to commit these  horrendous and meaningless crimes? Manson knew the layout of the Polanski house. It is quite possible that the crimes were committed at that house because Manson wanted to scare Terry Melcher for not backing his recording career. Terry Melcher, was a man in the music business. Manson tried unsuccessfully to convince Melcher to finance a film in which Manson’s music could be used. Melcher once lived in the Polanski house, and thus by killing tenants, the Family could scare him. Some people in the family believed that it was done because it would spark nation wide publicity and the murders would be â€Å"noticed.† The Manson Family murders are certainly the most bizarre acts of serial murder the United States has ever seen. The reason is that Manson’s motives do not fit under the more common motives held by serial killers. In conclusion I think Manson was a coward, he dragged desperate and innocent people that didn’t know any better, into his problems. After brain washing his people he told them to do the killing, actually never committing a murder himself. These murders were so bizarre because what would you expect from a bunch of brainwashed hippies, tripping out on acid. They were legally insane therefore, I don’t think they really knew what they were doing most of the time, which made things worse.

Introduction Major depressive disorder affects nearly 15 million of American adults in a given year. (Kessler, Chiu, Demler Walters, 2005). With the impact it has on the society as well as the well-being of the individual, it must be in the interest of the healthcare to be able to provide patients with the most effective treatment method. Extensive research has been conducted on the efficacy of antidepressant medication and cognitive therapy, the two main treatment methods used for depression today. The discussion has, however, been characterized by conflicting claims, resulting in a debate over what should be used rather than us having definite conclusion of how patients are best helped. Keywords used include â€Å"cognitive therapy†, â€Å"psychotherapy†, â€Å"antidepressants†, â€Å"medication†, â€Å"psychopharmaca†, â€Å"depression treatment† and â€Å"depressive disorder†. Results In research conducted by Hollon et al (2005), it was stated that while there was evidence for the enduring effects of cognitive therapy, there was a lack of extensive research comparing the effects to the use of antidepressant medication after terminating the treatment. In the study, 180 patients meeting the criterias for severe and major depression were assigned to either one of the treatment methods. Of these, 104 met the response criteria and were included in a 12 month continuation phase and constitute the main focus of the study. Patients who had responded to the therapy were withdrawn and followed up during a 12-month period. Those who had responded to the medication treatment (Paroxetine) were either assigned to a placebo group or a continuation meducation group, with both being followed up for 12 months. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was used during the entire study, and during the continuation phase relapse was defined as a return of symptoms lasting for at least 2 weeks. The results display that patients who had been withdrawn from cognitive therapy treatment were less likely to relapse (30.8%) than those who had been withdrawn from medications (76.2%).
